How to Estimate Paint Quantity

Measure area, coats, and coverage without buying too little.

What it does and when to use it

Paint quantity depends on net area, number of coats, and coverage printed on the can. Rough walls or major color changes may need more.

What information to enter

Calculate wall area, subtract large openings, and enter coats plus expected coverage per liter.

How to understand the result

The result is a theoretical quantity. Round to available can sizes and keep a small touch-up allowance.

Formula at a glance

Paint liters = area × coats ÷ coverage per liter

Short example

50 m², two coats, and 10 m²/L coverage require about 10 liters.

Common mistakes

  • Using floor area instead of wall area.
  • Ignoring an extra coat on porous or dark surfaces.

Häufige Fragen

Should windows and doors be removed?

Yes when they are substantial; small openings can serve as contingency.

Is primer included?

No. Estimate primer separately using its own coverage.
